Ace of Cakes is baked

Ace Of Cakes: Done! The tenth season of Ace of Cakes will be its last, the Food Network announced Friday. Will you miss the show?

Ace of Cakes canceled by The Food Network

The Food Network's take on the cake craze, Ace of Cakes, will wrap after 10 seasons on the air, the network reported Friday.

"It's true: All good things must come to an end. Ace of Cakes' 10th season, set to air in January, will be our last," Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman said on a blog posted on the Charm City Cakes website.

"About three weeks ago, we completed filming and wished a tearful goodbye to our beloved crew from Authentic Entertainment (and threw a rager of a wrap party.)"

Ten seasons of cake

Ace of Cakes was likely cancelled because they couldn't compete with TLC's wildly-popular Cake Boss. The Hoboken, N.J.-based Cake Boss continues to be a runaway hit with audiences, while Ace of Cakes struggled to find a strong following.

Bigger projects on the horizon

Goldman said that more opportunities are on the horizon for Charm City Cakes.

"[A]lthough we can't reveal too much yet, there are definitely plans afoot for some big things for us in the future. Some of those plans involve TV cameras, some don't. But believe you me, we aint (sic) going anywhere," he wrote.

3 Ways to serve carrots

Healthy Carrot DishesAs it turns out, Mom was right: Carrots are good for your eyes as well as the rest of you. Good thing they taste so good. They’re also very versatile. Whether you like your carrots sweet or savory, soft or crunchy, there’s a way to cook carrots that you’ll love.

Braised carrots

A nutritional powerhouse

Carrots are not only tasty -- they're really good for you. Carrots are loaded with beta carotene, which helps maintain healthy eyesight. They also contain fiber, natural sugars, folic acid, potassium, calcium and magnesium. With all these nutrients, you should munch on carrots whenever you get the chance.

Creative carrot recipes >>

In raw form, carrots are crunchy and slightly sweet. Eat them alone or with a dip; serve them as an appetizer or a snack. You can even grate them and add them to salads, sandwiches, cakes or cookies. If these combinations aren't enough for you, don't worry: With so many ways to cook them, you'll never run out of new things to try. Here are a just a few ways to enjoy them:

1Mashed

Mashed carrots make an excellent side dish and are great for a casual dinner or for a holiday feast. Aside from that, they're super easy to make. Simply peel and cut the carrots, then add them to boiling water (or start with baby carrots, which don't need to be peeled or cut). Cook them until they're soft and can be stabbed easily with a fork. Drain, then mash them and add a bit of margarine. If you want them sweeter, add brown sugar to taste. This step pretty much blows the waist-friendly benefit of the dish, but the taste is delicious.

2Orange-glazed

Braised carrots are quick and easy to make and work as a delicious and colorful side dish. The orange juice gives them an unexpected but pleasing tang. Chop the carrots into bite-sized pieces, then add them to a hot pan with some margarine. Cover the carrots until the liquid begins to bubble, then uncover. Once the margarine starts to brown, pour just enough orange juice over the carrots to cover them. Let them simmer until all of the liquid has evaporated. Sprinkle the carrots with thyme (you can omit this step if thyme isn't your thing) and serve while they're still hot.

3Roasted

Roasted carrots are a quick and easy complement to a fall meal. When cooked correctly, they're crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Simply cut carrots in half lengthwise, then into strips between one and two inches long. Place the carrots on a baking sheet and toss them in just enough olive oil to lightly coat them. Spread the carrots out so they're not touching, and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Roast them at 350 F for about 30 minutes, or until they start to brown.

In a hurry? Cut up carrots and add a few tablespoons of water per pound. Place them in a microwave-safe dish, cover and microwave for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring halfway through.More ways to cook with carrots

Celebrate Pi Day with a piece of pie

Strawberry pie

Pi Day may be a holiday celebrated mostly in the math world, but here in the food world, we think it’s also a great excuse to eat (what else?) pie! Not that we really need an excuse to eat delicious baked goods.

There’s no better time for pie than Pi Day!

March 14th, or 3/14, is Pi Day. How many digits of pi can you recite? Most people know pi simply as 3.14, but it is actually a never-ending mathematical constant. Some celebrate Pi Day by reciting as many decimal digits of pi from memory as possible, but we’re celebrating by having a slice or two of the real thing. The world record holder recited upwards of 60,000 digits in almost 24 hours. Now that man deserves a piece of pie!

In honor of Pi Day, try one of these fruity pie recipes today.

Meatless Monday Spinach and mushroom manicotti

Filled With Flavor!A traditional, Italian pasta dish makes a great meal on a Meatless Monday. Add some veggies to the creamy filling for more flavor.

Spinach and mushroom manicotti

Pasta is one of the most versatile and easy dishes to prepare. When it comes to this Italian delight, you don't have to settle for spaghetti or penne to make a simple meal. Spinach and mushroom manicotti is an easy dish to make, but it has an added "wow" factor thanks to the creamy filling. The addition of spinach and mushrooms provides flavor and ups your veggie intake, too!

Spinach and mushroom manicotti recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:8 ounces manicotti tubes, cooked according to package directions12 ounces low-fat ricotta cheese1-1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese1 egg2 packed cups fresh spinach, chopped2 cups cremini mushrooms, diced2 garlic cloves, minced1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper1/4 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes12 ounces prepared pasta sauce (more to taste)Directions:
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F.While the pasta is cooking, add the ricotta cheese and 1 cup mozzarella cheese to a large bowl. Add the egg, and mix all the ingredients together until smooth.Add the chopped spinach, mushrooms, garlic, black pepper, salt and red pepper flakes and mix well.Add about 1/2 cup of the pasta sauce to the bottom of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish so it is covered with the sauce. When the manicotti has finished cooking, rinse it with cool water, then drain it.One by one, either using your fingers or a small spoon, carefully fill each manicotti tube with the cheese mixture. You want the filling to go through the entire tube, from end to end.Place the manicotti in the baking dish, each snug against the other. Spoon the remaining pasta sauce over the manicotti and cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the sauce is bubbly. Uncover the manicotti and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the top. Bake, uncovered, for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and it begins to turn golden.Serve on individual plates.

Wow them with manicotti!

Burger King hosting Free Fries Day this Friday

Try The Newest BK Fries For FreeWant to try Burger King's newest fries for free? You're in luck. Free Fries Day is taking place in just two days.

Burger King Fries

A few weeks ago, we shared the news that Burger King fries were getting a makeover. We also mentioned that the fast food chain wanted you to try them -- for free.

It's almost time! To celebrate the new Burger King fries, you can stop by any Burger King location this Friday, Dec. 16 and receive a free order of fries. This free food event has been dubbed Free Fries Day and it's really free! You don't even have to purchase a Whopper (or any other menu item) to receive the free fries.

Try our recipes for gourmet fries >>

Burger King said that the new fries are made from a thicker cut of potato that "gives each bite more fluffy, potato flavor on the inside and crispy, golden-brown deliciousness on the outside."

The new fries were rolled out at almost all North American Burger King restaurants during the first week of December.

Burger King hadn't updated its fry formula since 1998, so this is a big change. The new Burger King fries have 20 percent less sodium, so that's a plus. And they're cheap -- a "value portion" is just $1. That size isn't a huge diet-buster, at least when it comes to fast food. The value portion contains 240 calories and 330 mg of sodium.

For Free Fries Day, Burger King is offering guests a complimentary value portion.

What do you think of the new Burger King fries? Worth a trip to BK to grab a free order on Free Fries Day?

Competition, cash aid in weight loss

Money Incentives, Competition Spur Weight LossCompetition and money fuel weight loss success, a study indicates.

weight loss competition

Here’s a new reason to be a team player and join your employer’s next “Biggest Loser” challenge: A new study suggests that people lured to lose weight with financial incentives may drop more pounds as part of a group competition.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at one group of five people who would earn $100 if they met an individual weight-loss goal. Another scenario of five people offered $100 as well, but offered more money to those if other members of the group did not lose weight—that group lost three times the amount of weight compared to the first group.

In essence, your success may thrive on your competitive spirit.

“People may be more motivated to achieve a particular goal when a particular resource that had been allocated for them is given to someone else if they don't achieve their goal,” said Dr. Jeffrey Kullgren, the lead author from the University of Michigan Medical School and the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System.

The possibility of earning more than $100 along with the competitive nature of the contest may have been the factor that drove more weight loss in the second group, the researchers say.

So, what’s the best plan and how much will it cost an employer or organization?

“There are hundreds of different ways you can think about doing it. I don't think there's a consensus about what the best way is,” noted Robert Jeffery, who has studied financial incentives at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He added that organizations can pay based on pounds lost, or pay up based on how long participants keep weight off.
